Thanks for your good eyes/ears on what Knopfler is doing here. Helps my ears hear these recordings better, too ;-) Some really great stuff here, thanks for pointing it out. He should be left to shine a little more than he did, but these short glimpses of Knopfler's brilliance truly lifts these songs, from a time when Dylan himself might not have been the most inspired person in the world. Thanks again, the compilations will be the soundtrack for tomorrow!

You had me laughing at … “By Knopfler standards, it felt sloppy, but by Dylan guitar-solo standards it was practically Hendrix!” Reminded me of Caesar’s comment of Bob’s playing…”chord scanning”

Thanks for posting this. There is a nice moment in the Forever Young video at 4.30 when Mark sings "May you song always be sung". Tony Garnier seems to enjoy iy.

as a blind willie, Knopfler and Dylan nut, i was flabbergasted when. at one fo my shows, oberhausen 2011 i hear the first notes ring out and realise it is the first time this epic song is being played together, live, by my 2 big musical heroes. awesome version it was too. would love to hear more about that Straits being considered as his backing band...

thnx for this interesting piece

Ray, your observation of Mark lifting Bob when he comes on mirrors the one I made back there in 2011. I was at the last show at London on 20/11/11, and at the earlier one at Bournemouth on 14/10/11. At the earlier show, my recollection is that Mark came on later in Bob's set. I had not been enjoying the show - I found Bob's rasping vocal style at that time hard to listen to, and the band was driving me mad, just playing clump clump clump with no creative playing, presumably at Bob's instruction. It was also hard to see a few people getting up and leaving - I suppose they had come to see Mark's set, but even so... Anyway, when Mark came on, there was a transformation, not only in the band's playing, but in their whole demeanour, which up to that point had appeared quite downcast. I haven't found a recording of this show to confirm my memory, but I think I am right because it has stuck in my mind more strongly than many other shows. Thinking back to that show, I can't believe the form Bob is in now, some 10 years later.

Anyway, thanks for another great article. All the best

Gareth
