Interesting you should mention that Burlington '96 'This Wheel's On Fire' - that's my favourite performance of the song too!

In the intro to Oxford Town he's saying, "This is, uh, somebody asked to play this, somebody just asked me to play this a while back."

I've really enjoyed this triple set of newsletters - thanks!

On another note, a project I’ve thought about is putting together a consortium of deadheads, tramps, bobcats, vanatics, rusties, etc to collaborate on a list of “recommended” recordings (performance and quality) for every tour / period. Olaf’s lists as an example for a start. I realize this is fraught with subjectivity, but the idea is to steer people towards great live listening experiences going deep into as many artists as possible.

Ray, I really like If Dogs Run Free. I have always liked it. No kidding. I was there when he first played it in Münster that first of October in 2000. It was the highlight of the show. Really.

See, this is why I listen to and love Dylan's NET era field recorgings/boots wayyyy more than anything pre-NET. Look at the dates on almost all these entries - I think they're almost all in the NET. 'Course, that's also largely because of the way you set this up - highlighting how many years it had been since the last time. (Or, some of these songs, many in fact, had never been played live until the NET.) But still - sure, I love the '75/'76 Thunder shows, but they're actually a bit samey within each of those 2 years. Setlist rarely changes, and no huge surprises even when it does.

Thanks so much for putting this together Ray. I’ve got a lot of listening to do now, starting with the Montreal 97 show!

My favourite performance of Down Along The Cove is from Baltimore Arena, Baltimore, ND on 1999-11-08 - the band clearly having a great time while putting down a great groove - Bob laughing out loud at the end.

Uh, Ray? “if Dogs Run Free” isn’t from Nashville Skyline, it’s New Morning. (I always thought it was basically a Rod McKuen parody.)
